What Is Matcha Milk Tea?
Matcha milk tea is a delicious tea drink that is made from matcha green tea powder, hot water and milk. With the addition of tapioca pearls, or boba, matcha milk tea has a unique boba tea flavor that is both refreshing and creamy.
About Matcha Milk Tea
For those who haven’t had matcha milk tea before, you might be wondering about the details of this beverage and how it’s different from other types of milk tea.
Before you head to your nearest boba tea seller, you can learn more about matcha right here in preparation for your first sip.
The Matcha Types
Matcha comes in three different forms: matcha milk tea powder, matcha tea bags, and matcha powder. Which you decide to use when making your own matcha milk tea might have an effect on the final taste (see also: What Does Taro Milk Tea Taste Like?)of your drink.
Matcha Milk Tea Powder
The convenience of using matcha milk tea powder is its main advantage. Simply combine the powder and water, and then the liquid portion of the drink can then be made quickly and simply. You only need to add milk; everything else is done for you!
You won’t get as much flavor if you use premixed powder, which is a drawback. A high-quality green tea powder can be pleasantly flavorsome and fresh. However, if you choose a subpar replica, you’ll lose some of the flavors.
Matcha Tea Bags
It’s easy to brew matcha with matcha tea bags, and using them to make matcha milk tea is a convenient option. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the drink isn’t authentic because the flavor will be weaker.
Matcha Powder
Using this powder has the benefit of having excellent flavor. The flavor of premium matcha powder is very unique. As a result, when prepared as in our recipe below, it can be genuinely remarkable.
The main drawback of using matcha tea powder is its high price, particularly when compared to less expensive mixtures. Additionally, it might be expensive to purchase enough powder to last because it is difficult to manufacture in large quantities.
The Taste
Matcha milk tea has a deep, earthy, and sweet flavor. It has a superb flavor profile because of the special mix of matcha powder, creamer, and sweetener.
Our recipe combines milk’s smoothness with sugar, honey, or syrup’s sweetness. However, it will most importantly have the earthy depth of premium matcha green tea powder.
The Ingredients
The ingredients you’ll need to make matcha milk tea are generally quite easy to find. By using high-quality ingredients, you can make a delicious batch of matcha milk tea.
Matcha Green Tea
First, you’ll need matcha green tea powder to create the base of your drink. This is done easily by adding hot water to the powder.
You can find matcha green tea powder in most stores, but you’ll find the best powder in specialist tea stores. It’s down to you to decide which you use, but to make the most out of our recipe, we recommend something high-quality.

Milk
Milk is another key component of matcha milk tea. You can use any type of milk you like, but this will alter the texture of your drink. We definitely recommend using plant-based milk to complement the other ingredients and flavor in your tea.
Tapioca Pearls
Tapioca pearls are optional, but will make your matcha milk tea much more authentic. They’re relatively easy to prepare, or you could even get instant tapioca boba pearls, which are great when you’re in a hurry!
Sweetener
A couple of tablespoons of liquid sweetener in your tea will go a long way if you prefer sweeter flavors. Honey works particularly well with matcha milk tea, but you can use any sweetener you like.
How To Make Matcha Milk Tea
Ingredients
- ¼ cup of hot water
- 1 teaspoon of matcha green tea powder
- 1 cup of milk
- 1-2 tablespoons of sweetener
- ½ cup of cooked tapioca pearls (optional)
- Ice
Directions
- In a small bowl, whisk the matcha green tea powder with hot water until it starts to foam. Once a froth forms, set aside to cool.
- Add your sweetener of choice in a tall glass.
- Add the cooked tapioca pearls if desired, followed by the ice and milk.
- Finish by pouring your cooled matcha tea on top and stir to combine the sweetener.
Adding Boba
If you do decide to add tapioca boba pearls to your matcha milk tea, you’ll need to cook them first (unless you opted for instant boba pearls).
To cook the tapioca pearls, boil them for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent them from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Then, turn off the heat and let them sit for another 20-25 minutes.
Once the boba pearls have cooled down, drain the water from them and place them back in the pot. Add water and brown sugar, and stir well over medium heat until the sugar dissolves and the syrup starts to thicken.
The pearls should be soft and chewy after they are thoroughly cooked.
